My company upgraded from QB Pro multi-store version 7 to version 2013. It is a big jump but we had gotten to know version 7 so well (all the bugs and how to work around limited features) that we did not want to risk more problems: upgrading with QB may bring a couple of new features but also a lot more new bugs. We also connect it to QB Enterprise accounting. I am in charge of the computer system and I have worked before as POS programmer with NCR, Sharp, Maitre D’, Micros and a couple of other systems.QB POS 2013 is just a lot more problems than improvements: Here are just a few- Much too big for the recommended system requirements which would be if you do not use your PC for anything else at all but the POS: no word processor, no spreadsheet, no email, no internet… Just nothing else.- The merchant service for credit card processing is totally changed which in itself brings a load of new issues especially when you have multi-stores.- When bringing up a customer for whom you use charge accounts, the account balance does not even show with the customer info, unless you actually call on the account function which opens a new window. Then of course you have to close it to start ringing anything.- You can no longer navigate from one window to another: let’s say you have a report open, then you need to make a sale if a customer shows up, you need to completely close the report windows to open the sales ticket. this does not allow background windows for multi-tasking.- Inventory is riddled with bugs, one of them concerning the new feature showing new items, price changes, items below re-order points… which plants a “Inventory Reminders” message on the home screen (and you can’t get rid of that message, even if you have none of these reminders active. I have gone through each items, deleted any entry in the reorder field, and still have that message. And by the way, even for non-inventory items, it does take it as a regular item, go figure… When creating new items, it does not assign the next available item number anymore, just the same specific number every time (in my case # 6116), so you have to make sure you look first at what is available. Also, when you add that new item, it goes all the down the item list, so you have to sort the list again. The navigation between frames, windows and other functions are just so time consuming and tedious, so much for the new GUI!I just discovered now that my server POS does not show the same number of customers in the sales ticket window than my satellite register (at the same store) and when I click on the pull-down list, they are not sorted at all and of course some of these customers are missing.
There are so many other shortfalls and bugs (that I have yet to discover) that there is not enough space here and I don’t have the time. The bottom line is, after working more than 6 years with QB POS with 2 or 3 versions, what I can suggest is: if you really don’t have to upgrade to 2013, don’t. If you are thinking about using QB 2013 for the first time, spend more time to research other options. The problem here is that many of these options have their own set of problems, unless you can spend a fortune to have the best of both the product and the support. Finally, if there is no other option, make sure you sign up for anger management classes because you will get frustrated more than once, especially if you want to use all the features of that program.The reason because this QB (and many other systems) has such design flaws and subsequent bugs, is that it has been conceived by people who have no experience or concept at all about how a retail store works. They are just geeks behind a desk who live in their own gigabit world. No offense, we do need them to write all these codes. But the people who employ them do not want to consult with real, in-the-field, professionals to explain to the geeks which functions and features need to be programmed. There is just no analysis of the real world. That’s why this program is so cheap!
